I told my frat bros we had to go together as a themed group and we settled on professional wrestlers.

One of the sororities at pharmacy school always hosted a Halloween party. I thought it would be nice to honor him by writing about his impact in my life.Įven as an “adult” in college, I still had a place in my heart for Animal. I’m recalling these fond memories as sadly, Road Warrior Animal – Joe Laurinaitis passed away yesterday. Their signature move was the Doomsday Device! There was a reason they were around 21 years.

Put these guys in awesome pads, makeup, and give them great intro music and we got an iconic team. But their intensity, strength, and unwillingness to back down made them fan favorites. They were often supposed to the bad guys, or “heel” in wrestling terms. There is a story about them shoulder shrugging 950 lbs. They were body builders first, later stumbling into wrestling. These two were massive, even when put against the other wrestlers. One of the first things Hawk decided to do was cut his hair into a double mohawk and he had Animal do a single mohawk so it appeared they fit together.

Hawk and Animal fit my definition of disobedience. How awesome is that for a 7 year old to wear? Turns out the whole outfit of the LOD was modeled after a 1981 film, Mad Max: The Road Warrior, starring Mel Gibson. I remember my dad taking me to a live wrestling event and he bought me these foam pads!

Grandpa would say, “Hey, you want to watch some wrastlin’?”.Ī tag team I fell in love with, known as The Road Warriors or later known as The Legion of Doom (LOD), was made up of Road Warrior Hawk (Michael Hegstrand) and Road Warrior Animal (Joseph Laurinaitis). Professional wrestling was introduced to me at young age by my Grandpa Collins. “I woke up and realized life is great and people are awesome and life is worth living” – Hulk Hogan
